INTERPRETATION
Skim Milk Powder is used for the maintenance of lactic acid bacteria and
as a differential medium for determining the action of bacteria on milk. Mix
the powder to a smooth paste with a small quantity of distilled water, then
gradually add more distilled water until a 10% w/v mixture is obtained. This is
equivalent to fresh milk, and may be sterilized by autoclaving for 5 minutes at
121 ¡ÆC. Care should be taken
not to overheat during sterilization, otherwise caramelization will occur.
STORE
The powder is very hygroscopic. Store the powder at room temperature, in a
dry environment, in its original container tightly closed and use it before the
expiry date on the label or until signs of deterioration are evident.
